The holidays can feel different when someone you love is no longer here and that’s okay.

At Hearts Connected, we believe in holding space for all the big emotions sadness, joy, longing, and love. Here are some ways to support a child (or yourself) through grief this holiday season:

• Talk openly - it’s okay to say, “I miss them,” or “this doesn’t feel the same.”
• Create memory rituals - light a candle, make a memory ornament, or write letters.
• Plan for hard moments - think ahead about which traditions are meaningful and which might be too much this year.
• Use creative expression - drawing, journaling, or play can help process feelings.
• Lean on your support - friends, family, grief groups, or a counselor are essential.
• Take care of yourself - set boundaries, skip events, or take breaks (including from social media).

Grief doesn’t follow a schedule, and remembering someone you love doesn’t mean your holidays can’t have meaning. You’re not alone.

Toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age kids can all experience gratitude in ways that match their age and feelings.

Toddlers are just beginning to notice others and feel happy when someone is kind. We can help them feel thankful through very simple talk and gentle actions.

💬 Who was kind to you today?
Maybe mom or dad held you, or a friend shared a toy.
🎨 What nice thing did you do for someone?
Maybe you gave a hug, helped pick something up, or said “hi.”
💛 Gratitude is when we smile inside and feel good when people are kind to us.
We show it when we say “thank you” or when we give kindness back.”

Preschoolers are getting better at seeing how other people feel. We can grow their gratitude by talking about kindness and noticing how good it feels.

Regulate with your child, not for your child. Sit beside them, take a deep breath together, and show that it’s okay to have feelings. When big feelings show up, our instinct is to fix them but the real magic happens when we show up beside them, not above them. Regulation starts with connection.

You’re not solving the moment, you’re sharing it with them.

Hearts Connected is seeking an aspiring child life specialist who is looking for additional child life experience in a community-based, private practice child life organization!

This learning experience is designed to expose the intern to experience a community-based child life organization. This position is not patient-facing, however, there will be clinical experiences available involving virtual therapeutic work with kids and teens! This is not a paid position. While these hours are supervised by a Certified Child Life Specialist, the hours accrued during this internship are not considered "clinical hours" and do not count towards hours needed to apply for child life certification through Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP). This internship does, however, include completing the ACLP Pre-Internship Learning Modules.

The conversation this past week reminded us of something powerful: When more people understand, value, and champion child life work, children benefit.

After our webinar on preventing medically induced trauma, we heard from so many Child Life Specialists who shared a hopeful truth. Collaboration across disciplines doesn’t diminish our role… it amplifies it.

A nurse advocating for psychosocial care is not a threat to child life. It’s evidence that our decades of education, advocacy, and persistence are working.

We are minimizing our role if we think tools or other disciplines can replace us. Our expertise isn’t fragile, it’s foundational, and it becomes even more effective when others understand it and join the mission!

Thank you to everyone who voiced support, who sees the bigger picture, and who continues to push this movement forward. Your passion fuels meaningful change across pediatric care.

PREDICT → COPE → PROCESS
As a caring parent or caregiver, your journey often begins before an appointment even starts—maybe it's that flutter of nerves about a doctor’s visit, a therapy session, or a school meeting. Developing a coping plan together ahead of time can increase effective coping in the moment. Make a plan of what to do in the waiting room, or what fidget to use during the appointment. That’s your PREDICT moment: you notice the worry before it grows. "Let's make a plan together for how we what we will do during the hard parts of this appointment."

Next, you COPE. You pause. You take a few steady, grounding breaths. You gently remind yourself and your child, "We have managed this before, and we can handle it again." This is not about getting it perfectly right—it’s about responding with kindness and calm.

Finally comes PROCESS. You reflect—how did the appointment go? What did you feel, think, or do that made a difference? What did it teach you about your strengths and what supports you’re building? This step is not just reflection—it’s gentle learning.

Make a plan for reconnection and coregulation after a challenging appointment.

When kids ask “why” all day long, it’s not just about facts.

It’s about processing experiences — not just passively receiving them.
And it’s about connection. Not just curiosity.

🧠 Here’s what’s really going on developmentally:
Young children are rapidly building their understanding of cause and effect, emotions, relationships, and routines.
“Why” is their way of organizing the world — especially when change or stress is on the horizon (hello, new school year).

💛 Emotionally, the “why”s are often less about answers and more about assurance. They’re asking:
• Is it safe to be curious?
• Can I trust you to help me understand?
• Will you still listen even when I’m asking again…and again…and again?

And when we respond — not always perfectly, but patiently and warmly — we’re doing something powerful:
We’re telling them that their thoughts matter.
That their questions are welcome.
