5 Benefits of Telehealth for Mental Health Care

Though telehealth has been around for many years, many organizations have only offered virtual services since the pandemic began. As the world is adjusting to new social and professional norms, telehealth sessions have become increasingly popular and even preferred by many families. So why do some people prefer telehealth sessions over in-person? Here are a few reasons why:

  1. More flexibility In-person sessions may be difficult to schedule when you factor in transit time, school and work hours, and other appointments or errands that interfere with scheduling and attending a session. With telehealth, you have more flexibility in finding a time that works best for you and your schedule.

  2. The comfort of your own home For some, the idea of going to an office to speak about vulnerable or anxiety-provoking topics can be a frightening task, especially for children and teens who haven’t attended a therapy session before. A new place may take a few sessions to get comfortable in. But attending a virtual session in the comfort and familiarity of your own home takes away the barriers that come with being in an office.

  3. Ability to meet with anyone Maybe you want to meet with a specialist who lives across the country. Maybe you live in a rural area that doesn’t offer services that fulfill your needs. With virtual services, you have options to meet with anyone, located anywhere, which opens up several possible services you may not have had access to previously.

  4. Access to care despite circumstances Life can be hectic-- travel, an illness, a family emergency, or other circumstances prevent in-person therapy sessions from happening. With virtual care, services can happen despite a situation that may provide barriers to services.

  5. Ability to meet quickly during urgent situations Sometimes services need to be delivered on short notice. Maybe an unexpected life change or a recent scheduled doctor’s appointment is causing anxiety that needs to be dealt with immediately. Oftentimes, in-person sessions cannot cater to urgent appointments. With the flexibility and accessibility of telehealth, you can schedule sessions on short notice.
